Who is the video course for?

If you’re ready to dive in and learn synthesis and sound design from the ground up with one of the world’s most beloved sound designers, then this course is for you! Perhaps you own a synthesizer, either a virtual one on your computer or a hardware one, and you love the sounds that come with it or you’ve purchased a preset library for it, BUT… you actually don’t know how to program your own sound, maybe you are constantly diving for presets and you waste a lot of time searching for the right sound, and even when you get it, it’s not 100% what you want. Or, maybe you’re tired of the same presets you’ve been using over and over again. Well, in this course, Julian “J3PO” Pollack teaches you HOW to make your own sounds from scratch by teaching you fundamental subtractive synthesis. Following his method that he’s been using for over a decade, J3PO demystifies the components of synthesis and takes you on a journey, utilizing the classic virtual analog synthesizer the OB-Xd (free download by DiscoDSP), a fantastic synth that is a recreation of the famed Oberheim OB-X. In the course, J3PO breaks it all down: oscillators, filters, envelopes, modulation, FX, and much more. Once you’ve completed this course, not only will you have a deep understanding of the OB-Xd, but you can take this knowledge and apply it to other synths in your arsenal! Start understanding synthesis and making your own sounds today!

THE VIDEO COURSE IS IN DEVELOPMENT AND IT WILL BE AVAILABLE BY THE END OF JANUARY 2024

Julian “J3PO” Pollack is a Los Angeles-based keyboardist/producer and is known for his innovative use of synthesizers and sound design in jazz, fusion, hip-hop, and electronic styles of music. In addition to touring and releasing his own music, he has toured extensively with the legendary Marcus Miller, as well as Chris Botti, and has performed and/or recorded with Herbie Hancock, Santana, David Sanborn, Talib Kweli, Cindy Blackman, Joe Lovano, Mike Stern, Ledisi, David Foster, Lisa Fischer, Eric Harland, Marcus Gilmore, Michael League, Kamasi Washington, and many others.

In 2019 Julian released his first album Small Plates under his moniker J3PO. The album is a collection of 12 compositions that range from simple lo-fi beats to complex jazztronica future house tracks. Inspired by analog synths and sample-based music, J3PO’s music fuses his love for today’s contemporary production styles with a nod to the jazz tradition and the spontaneity of live music and improvisation. In 2021, Julian released his follow-up album Mains (2021 – Ropeadope) to much critical acclaim. The end of 2023 saw the release of the final album in the trilogy, Sweet Treats, a beat tape.

Julian has worked closely as a sound designer with keyboard/synth companies Nord Keyboards, Sequential, and Oberheim, and has created factory presets for the Prophet 5, the Oberheim OB-X8, Trigon-6, Nord Stage 3, Nord Stage 4, and many others. In addition to these hardware keyboard companies, Julian has done sound design for Universal Audio, Softube, and Cherry Audio. Currently, Julian works closely with Spectrasonics, developers of Omnisphere and Keyscape. His online store continues to supply the music production and synth community with abundant preset libraries that can be heard on many of today’s top music charts and movie scores.
